Exploring Victorian Medievalism in a Major Authors Course

Civilizing Violence: Medieval and Victorian Chivalric Literature logo

Throughout this major authors, writing-intensive course, students examine the reception of the Middle Ages inherited from the Romantics and Victorians. The guiding question is: What cultural work does the reception of past stories and forms (whether revivals or rejections) accomplish? Looking at Arthurian legend, (neo)courtly poetry, and even anti-medieval novels, students collaboratively develop an understanding of medievalism. To enable public scholarship, I facilitate students in adding their own voices to the conversation through collaboratively designing a branch logic game that interrogates medieval, Victorian, and contemporary conceptions of chivalry and masculinity and composing a digital storytelling video that engages how medievalism affects us today.
