If we prefer dialogue, we have to do more asking than telling.
– Alfie Kohn, Forward to Ungrading
While reading Ungrading by Susan D. Blum together, we also discuss how to design and implement a class with alternative assessment with the following workshops.
Workshop Descriptions
Preparing a Course without Grades
Want to try ungrading, but not sure where to start? Worried that students won’t engage projects without a traditional graded experience? In this session, participants will discuss the first steps to developing a course with alternative grading, focusing on assessment development, syllabus design, and strategies for communicating alternative forms of evaluation to students.
Teaching a Course without Grades
In this session, participants will discuss strategies and practices for supporting student learning without grades. A feedback-intensive, reflection-driven course will be modeled. Bring your concerns about alternative grading as we discuss challenges and solutions.
Ungrading Faculty Panel Discussion
In this session, participants will hear from colleagues who have implemented Ungrading practices in their classrooms. Be ready to ask your colleagues questions about how ungrading worked for them!
